Time Limit Calculation in Norton Family
When you enable time supervision, Norton Family automatically warns or blocks your child from using their device once the allowed time limit is reached. The time restriction you set applies separately to each device your child uses. For example, if your child uses three devices and you set a daily limit of 2 hours, they can spend 2 hours on each device per day.
Your child will receive a device lock notification every 5 minutes, starting 15 minutes before the time limit expires. Refer to the information below to learn how the time limit is calculated.
Time Limit Calculation on Android
On Android, device usage is measured by the time your child actively uses an application in the foreground. For example, if your child uses a messaging app for 5 minutes, spends 2 minutes on the home screen, and then uses a phone app for 10 minutes, the total device usage is calculated as 15 minutes.
Your child’s Android device is considered unused in the following situations:
- The device is on the home screen with no active applications in the foreground.
- The device is locked or turned off.
- The display is off.
- The device has entered sleep mode.
- The instant lock or time lock screen is in the foreground.
- The device is in daydream mode.
Time Limit Calculation on Windows
On Windows, device usage is calculated based on the amount of time your child's PC is active. The PC is considered unused in the following cases:
- The child locks their computer when stepping away.
- The computer enters sleep or hibernate mode.
- The child logs out of their user session.
Time Limit Calculation on iOS
Norton Family does not track device usage on your child's iOS device. However, it enforces curfews you set. For example, if you establish a curfew from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M., Norton Family locks the device at the start of the curfew and automatically unlocks it at the end.

Norton Family does not completely lock your child's iOS device; it only hides the installed apps, including the Norton Family app and default apps such as Safari, iTunes Store, App Store, and Camera.
